MAREVANTA

The Marevanta Coast Journal

The coast, the way we know it.

We didn't choose Balchik by accident. It's the quiet counterpoint to Bulgaria's busy resorts — white cliffs, a botanical garden falling into the sea, and a coastline that still feels like a secret.

So rather than a tourist list, this is the coast the way we live it: where to swim before the day warms, where the locals actually eat, and when the light on the water is at its best.

Sea temperatures are approximate. Our own favourite is September — warm water, golden light, and the coast almost to yourself.

01

The swimming

Below the white cliffs, small coves stay calm and quiet even in August. Bolata — a green river-mouth bay near Kaliakra — is the prettiest we know; the town beach is easy for slow days.

Go before nine. The light on the water in the first hour is the reason we built here.

02

Cape Kaliakra

A two-kilometre finger of red rock reaching into the sea, an old fortress along its spine, and the best chance on this coast to see dolphins offshore.

Come late afternoon, when the cliffs turn copper. ~35 minutes.

03

The Palace & Botanical Garden

Queen Marie of Romania's seaside palace, terraced down to the water in Balchik itself, wrapped in one of the Balkans' great botanical gardens.

Find the cactus garden, then a coffee by the sea gate.

04

The golf coast

Three championship links on the cliffs — Thracian Cliffs, BlackSeaRama and Lighthouse — among the most dramatic sea-golf in Europe.

Book Thracian Cliffs for the views, even if your handicap says otherwise. ~25 minutes.

05

Where we eat

Skip the resort strips. In Balchik's old harbour, small tavernas grill the morning's catch; inland, village mehanas do slow-cooked lamb and honest local wine.

Ask for the house rakia and whatever the fisherman brought in that day.

06

The mineral lakes

Tuzlata, just outside town — warm mineral mud and open-air soaking, a local ritual for tired shoulders and a slow afternoon.

Pair it with a long lunch afterwards. You won't want to rush.

07

Varna, the sea capital

Forty minutes south: Roman baths, the long Sea Garden promenade, museums and the best dining on the coast — a full day, easily.

The evening promenade is the point. Stay for it.

Everything is close.
